Nick Chenard

  1 NHL Game

April 10, 2023 Toronto Maple Leafs vs Florida Panthers. 2-1 win.

Toronto suffered through a plague of injured goalies all throughout the 2022-23 season. The Leafs were up against the salary cap at the end of the year and faced an unusual problem. They only had one healthy goalie in Ilya Samsonov but no cap room to recall a minor-league goalie, even on an emergency basis. The Leafs were forced to sign an amateur to a tryout contract. Enter Nick Chenard, whose season in the OHL with the Owen Sound Attack had just ended. Chenard's junior career was also over so he was free to sign with the Maple Leafs. Unlike local EBUG goalies, Chenard actually took the trip to Florida with the Toronto and was officially a member of the team. But it was a short stay. Chenard watched the Leafs beat the Panthers in a thrilling 2-1 overtime win. The amateur tryout contract stipulated that Chenard could only dress in one NHL game so his career with the Leafs was over.
