Mitchell Gibson

1 NHL Game

April 2, 2023 Washington Capitals vs New York Rangers. 2-5 loss.

When Mitchell Gibson's college career ended in 2023, he found himself an unexpected member of the Washington Capitals. Gibson had been drafted by Washington back in 2018 but he attended Harvard and never signed a contract with the NHL team. Washington had just offered him a one-year entry level deal but Gibson had yet to sign it. Not being under contract was important because when Charlie Lindgren came down with a sudden sickness, the Capitals had no cap room to recall or sign a replacement. The Capitals signed Gibson to an amateur tryout agreement (ATO), allowing him to dress in one NHL game and not impact the salary cap. Ironically, had Gibson gotten around to signing the original entry-level contract, he wouldn't had found himself in the NHL. Gibson dressed as backup to Darcy Kuemper in his only NHL game.
A few days after his making his NHL debut as a backup, Gibson officially became a professional when he signed the one-year, entry-level contract with the NHL club.
