Matt Onuska

1 NHL Game

April 11, 2023 Toronto Maple Leafs vs Tampa Bay Lightning. 4-3 win.

Toronto suffered through a plague of injured goalies all throughout the 2022-23 season. The Leafs were up against the salary cap at the end of the year and faced an unusual problem. They only had one healthy goalie in Joseph Woll but no room to recall a minor-league goalie, even on an emergency basis. The Leafs were forced to sign a string of amateur goalies to tryout contracts, Onuska was one of those goalies. Onuska had just completed his junior hockey career with the Windsor Spitfires when he got a very unexpected call from the Toronto Maple Leafs. He signed an ATO with the Leafs and accompanied them on a trip to Florida. He dressed as backup to Woll in a game against defending Cup champions the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Leafs walked away with a 4-3 win.
