Hunter Shepard

 1 NHL Game

February 1, 2022 Washington Capitals vs Pittsburgh Penguins. 4-3 win.

February 1, 2022 Less than 7 minutes into the first period of a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Capitals goalie Vitek Vanecek suffered an upper-body injury and had to leave. Ilya Samsonov took over the crease and Hunter Shepard, who was travelling with the team on Washington's taxi squad, got called to throw on this gear and join the team. Shepard sat as Washington's backup for the second and third periods.
The Capitals were set to face the Edmonton Oilers the very next day but opted to recall a more experienced backup for Samsonov in Pheonix Copley instead of remain with Shepard. February 2, just hours after dressing in his first NHL game, Shepard found himself on his way to the Hershey Bears to replace Copley on the AHL roster.
