Darren Beals

3 NHL Games

January 18, 1987 Edmonton Oilers vs Buffalo Sabres. 5-6 loss.
March 11, 1987 Edmonton Oilers vs Detroit Red Wings. 6-3 win.
March 17, 1987 Edmonton Oilers vs New Jersey Devils. 7-4 win.

Saturday January 17, 1987 Edmonton goalie and future Hockey Hall of Famer Grant Fuhr was injured in a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Oilers were set to play on Sunday but it was clear that Fuhr would be unable to dress. Darren Beals was recalled from the Kitchener Rangers junior team on emergency circumstances to dress as backup to Andy Moog. Beals' stay in the NHL was short as he was quickly sent back to the minors in favour of another Oilers farmhand, Darryl Reaugh, who had considerably more experience.

March, 1987 the Oilers lost Grant Fuhr to a minor injury. He was sidelined after getting hit on the ankle by a puck during a practise. With questions surrounding his return date, the Oilers opted to once again recall Darren Beals from his junior club. The Oilers shuffled backups during this little stretch, sending Beals back to his junior club in favor of another minor league goalie, Dave Roche. After serving as Moog's backup for two games, Roche was sent back to the minors and Beals was recalled again, dressing for this third and final NHL game.

Beals was signed by the Oilers as a free agent September, 1986. He attended the Oiler's 1987 training camp and saw some preseason action between the pipes for Gretzky's Oilers. Even though it was during the preseason, Beals still got to tend goal for one of the best clubs in NHL history. On top of his backup duties, Beals also practised with the NHL club for a stretch, for two weeks at the start of April, 1988.

Beals had a very short pro hockey career. After one year of pro with the Oilers organization he was left unsigned. Beals attempted to make the 1989/90 Phoenix Roadrunners of the IHL but was released from the team late October, 1989 and his hockey career was over. Beals returned to his hometown of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia after hanging up his skates.
