1 NHL Game
February 1, 1992 Toronto Maple Leafs vs New Jersey Devils. 6-4 win.
At the beginning of February, 1992 David Schill's dream came true when he got a call from the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was asked to backup future Hockey Hall of Famer Grant Fuhr. It all started when Rick Wamsley left the team due to the unfortunate death of his father. Leafs goalie Felix Potvin was out with an injury so the team was forced to look deep into their depth chart and recall rookie Damian Rhodes from St. John's of the AHL. The Leafs assigned Schill, far down on the team's depth chart, to serve as an emergency replacement in the AHL. A snowstorm, however, changed their plans and stranded Rhodes in Newfoundland. Schill, who was at Pearson airport trying to get a plane to St. John's, got a call from the Leafs to stay in Ontario and take Rhodes' place on the NHL roster. Schill's parents, who had gone shopping after dropping him off at the airport, got the surprise call to instead head to the arena to see their son in an NHL jersey. "It was a big deal. It was the biggest thrill of my life," said Schill. "Wendel Clark and Doug Gilmour took me out for supper that night."(1) Rhodes later caught the next available flight and Schill's short NHL career was over almost as quickly as it had began. Because the NHL did not consider the Brantford Smoke to be a pro hockey team, Schill was considered an amateur when he signed with Toronto.
David Schill played for four different OHL teams as a junior. He was never drafted but did get invites to NHL camps from the Toronto Maple Leafs and St. Louis Blues.

I remember this guy sitting in the bench & the TV commentators telling the crazy story of the days events as to how he ended up backing up Fuhr that night. Wow, almost 30 years now
