A star junior player with the Flin Flon Bombers, Cal Hammond was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1970. June, 1971 his rights were claimed by the AHL's Cleveland Barons from the Canadiens. In 1972 Hammond was signed by the NHL's Minnesota North Stars.
Three goalies appeared in net for the Minnesota North Stars during the 1972/73 NHL season. The legendary Gump Worsley started the year with the North Stars but a hamstring injury caused him to miss most of the latter part of the season and nearly caused his retirement. Cesare Maniago and Gilles Gilbert picked up the slack in Minnesota's net. Gilbert, however, was forced to sit out a few games with a broken finger. The North Stars recalled Cal Hammond for a period of time to serve as backup goalie to Maniago.

Cal Hammond came close to getting a chance to play in the NHL. He even fooled the Associated Press, who wrote an article about Hammond playing his first NHL game February 28, 1973. The article appeared in the Chicago Tribute but someone made an error. It seems as tough the sports reporter may have took the night off. Hammond himself confirmed that he just served as backup to Maniago for the game.
Hammond was released by the North Stars following the 1972/73 season. He returned to Flin Flon, Manitoba after hanging up his skates.
