1 NHL Game
February 3, 1993 Winnipeg Jets vs St. Louis Blues. 2-4 loss.
Early February, 1993 the Winnipeg Jets lost goalie Mike O'Neill, who needed shoulder surgery, for the rest of the season. The Jets recalled Mark Richards from the ECHL's Toledo Storm to take his place on Winnipeg's roster. Richards dressed as backup to Bob Essensa. A couple days later the Jets recalled Rick Tabaracci from the Moncton Hawks of the AHL and sent Richards back to the minors.
Richards commented on his only NHL game in a Feb. 5th, 1993 Toledo newspaper. "I think yesterday helped me a lot, getting called up to Winnipeg. It was a real boost my confidence that they had confidence in me. Even up there, I felt real good in practise."
Mark Richards was named to the NCAA Hockey East All-Rookie team in his first season at the University of Mass-Lowell. In 1990 the Winnipeg Jets drafted Richards 18th overall in the NHL Supplemental draft, a draft specifically for college age players. Richards was a Hockey East 1st All-Star in his last season of college hockey. He signed a two-year contract with the Winnipeg Jets in 1992.
Richards hung up his pads in 2003 and stepped behind the bench. He has been head coach of the CHL's Memphis RiverKings, the SPHL's Pee Dee Cyclones and the SPHL's Twin Cities Cyclones. He currently President of the SPHL's Macon Mayhem.
