With Dominik Hasek sidelined due to a hairline fracture in one of his ribs and with backup Andrei Trefilov also injured the Sabres were left with a hole in their crease at the end of the 1996/97 NHL season. Steve Shields was recalled from Rochester to become the Sabres starting goaltender but they were left scrambling to find him a backup. Martin Biron, who had been recalled from the QMJHL earlier in the year, had reached the maximum number of NHL games he was allowed to dress. The Sabres, therefore, were forced to look deep into their prospect pool for a second time and recalled 19 year old Scott Buhler from the WHL's Medicine Hat Tigers. He was a 9th round draft pick who's only experience with the Sabres was a brief stint at their 1996 training camp.
"I got the call the day after we lost out of the first round of playoffs in Medicine Hat," recalls Buhler. "I was was walking in the mall in Medicine Hat, and I heard my name over the public address intercom (I didn't have a cell phone at that time). I had a message to call my agent. When I called, my agent said 'are you sitting down?, because I think you should before I tell you the news.' I packed up that day, missed the year end team party, headed home and flew out to Buffalo the next morning. One quote I will always remember was walking into the dressing room the first time and being introduced to Brad May. He asked me, 'do you want me to take Shields out in warm up for ya?'"
After appearing with the Buffalo Sabres, Scott Buhler played two more years of junior hockey. He was left unsigned by the Sabres, played one season of pro hockey in 1999/2000 and then retired. He remained in Saskatchewan and currently works as an investment advisor.
