September, 1986 Roydon Gunn was signed by the Islanders as an undrafted free agent. He would get a handful of stints in the NHL over his two years with the Islanders organization. Gunn's first NHL game came when he dressed as Kelly Hrudey's backup late October, 1986. Later that season he was recalled again, this time to serve as Billy Smith's backup when Hrudey injured his left leg. Almost a year later Gunn was once again summoned, this time because Billy Smith had to sit out with a sprained ankle.
When asked about the games he dressed as an NHL backup Gunn was a little fuzzy but remembers being recalled for the first time. "It was fun to get called up, the coach said 'you are going to the Isle' and I though he said the IHL. It was a shock when I realized he meant the Islanders." I asked Gunn if he had a favorite memory from his time with New York. "Best time I had was stopping Mike Bossy with a sweet glove save in an intersquad game. I also played an exhibition game in the spectrum in Philly which was pretty cool."
Roydon Gunn's 1993-94 Memphis Riverkings jersey is in the Hockey Hall of Fame. October 30, 1993 in a game agains the Wichita Thunder Gunn made history when he wore a jersey with a decimal point. Gunn wore the jersey "Gunn .45" in the game, a reference to his last name and a revolver. A newspaper article from 1993 noted that, "Gunn, whose mask features two rifles and smoke billowing out and a chin guard picturing bullets in a holder, claims he's not a gun freak. Or a member of the NRA." The Hockey Hall of Fame reached out to the Member Riverkings to get Gunn's unique jersey.
