Robert Mayer moved from Switzerland to Canada in order to pursue a junior hockey career in the QMJHL. He was unable to attract enough attention from scouts to get drafted but ended up with an invitation to the 2008 Montreal Canadiens training camp. He turned a tryout into a three-year, entry-level contract with the Canadiens. In Mayer's first pro season in the Habs organization he lead the Cincinnati Cyclones to an ECHL championship, the Kelly Cup. Mayer was named playoff MVP. The next season Mayer was promoted to Montreal's AHL affiliate in Hamilton.
April, 2012 the Canadiens lost #1 goalie Carey Price to a concussion. With the season coming to an end and long out of the playoffs, the Habs recalled Robert Mayer. Mayer dressed as Peter Budaj's backup for the last three games of the regular season.
February 16, 2013 Robert Mayer was recalled from the AHL to dress as backup goalie to Peter Budaj. Carey Price had been forced to sit out one game due to a stomach flu.
May 9, 2013 the Canadiens were down three games to one in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Carey Price had just suffered a lower-body injury and Peter Budaj was given his first ever playoff start. Robert Mayer was recalled to serve as his backup. The Canadiens lost the game and their season was over.
July, 2013 Montreal resigned Mayer to a two-year, two-way contract. May, 2014 the Canadiens placed Mayer on waivers with the end result being contract termination. Mayer was stuck behind Carey Price and Dustin Tokarski and wanted to return to Switzerland. He represented his country at the 2014 World Championship.
