Chet Pickard's first two seasons in the WHL were spent serving as Carey Price's backup in Tri-City. In 2007/2008 he was named the team's starting goalie and had a career season. Pickard was named the WHL and CHL goalie of the year. That summer he was the first goalie selected in the 2008 NHL draft, chosen 18th overall by the Nashville Predators. The Predators quickly inked Pickard to an entry-level deal before the summer was over. Pickard's last season in junior was just as solid as his 07/08 campaign. He was again named WHL goalie of the year and was also named to Canada's World Junior team, winning a Gold medal as the team's backup netminder. In 2009 he made the jump to pro hockey.
Chet Pickard's only taste of the NHL was a brief one game call up in early April, 2012. Pickard dressed as Anders Lindback's backup while Pekka Rinna was recovering from a mild case of the flu.
Pickard was not offered a new contract with Nashville following the 2011/2012 season. He played the 2012/2013 campaign in Sweden and then returned to North America in 2013/2014, signing with the Edmonton Oilers' AHL affiliate, the Oklahoma City Barons. Pickard is destined to be forever known as a first round draft bust.
His younger brother, Calvin, has found much more success in the NHL.
