1999, undrafted goalie Jeff Maund was named to the NCAA's All-American Team. He caught the attention of NHL teams and that summer decided to forgo his last two years of college hockey and sign with the Chicago Blackhawks. He signed a two-year deal with the club that included a $700,000 signing bonus, too much money for Maud to pass up. He noted that he was not from a rich family and that his mother had made many sacrifices for him, “It’s going to be nice to be able to do a lot of stuff for her, because she gave up so much for me. There’s an education clause so that I can finish my schooling,” also noted Maund about the contract, “and I can bring my family down for my first NHL game. I’m really happy with it.” (1)
Jeff Maund was recalled to the NHL mid January 2001 when the Chicago Blackhawks decided to do a goaltender shuffle. They sent Michel Larocque to their AHL affiliate in Norfolk and recalled Maund from the same team. Larocque had been serving as Jocelyn Thibeault's backup and Maund simply took his place. Maund dressed as Thibeault's backup for 3 games before the same shuffle occurred and Maund found himself back in Norfolk, with Larocque once again in the NHL.
February 1, 2001 the Blackhawks again decided to send Michel Larocque to the AHL in favor of Jeff Maund. This time Maund only lasted one game as goalie Rob Tallas, who had just recovered from an injury, was recalled to take his place with the Blackhawks a few days later.
The following summer Maund was signed to a one year contract by the Boston Bruins. However, he would never make it back to the NHL.
