Alexei Volkov

1 NHL Game

October 21, 1998 Los Angeles Kings vs Florida Panthers. 1-1 tie.

The Los Angeles Kings drafted Russian Alexei Volkov in the third round of the 1998 NHL draft and later that summer signed him to a three-year contract. The Kings prompted Volkov to move overseas and play his junior hockey in North America. With the QMJHL's Halifax Mooseheads, Volkov was named 1998/99 Defensive Rookie of the Year. He also lead Russian to a 1999 World Junior Championship Gold medal and a 2000 World Junior Championship Silver medal.

October 18, 1998 Alexei Volkov was an 18 year old rookie playing for the Halifax Mooseheads. That night the Kings were playing the Colorado Avalanche. In a rare occurrence both of their goalies, Stephane Fiset and Jamie Storr, were injured during the game. Storr managed to finish the contest but the Kings were left scrambling to find a couple new netminders for their next game. Manny Legace became the new #1 and Alexei Volkov was called in to back him up. Volkov, who only played within Canada in the QMJHL, was held up at the Toronto border trying to enter the United States. He was issued a visa just in time to get across the border for game night. Manny Legace made his NHL debut on October 21, 1998 when the Kings met the Panthers. He played an outstanding game, making 49 saves and allowed LA to tie a game in which they were outshot 50-19. It would be Alexei Volkov's only game as a member of the LA Kings. For the team's next contest a more mature goalie in Ryan Bach was recalled to backup Legace and Volkov was returned to Halifax. Legace would actually get injured in that game and Ryan Bach was needed to play real NHL minutes.

Volkov only played a year of pro hockey in North America before returning to Russia. He helped Moscow Dynamo with the 2012 KHL Gagarin Cup as league champs.
